A fine malachite mounted carriage clock.
The rectangular case with outset corners under a gothic tracery gallery, the top, sides and dial surround set with malachite panels mounted in the foliate engraved gilt-brass case, the rear door, signed on the inside Howell James & Co London, finely engraved with a floral design with leaf scrolls, standing on four lion paw feet; the 1 ½ inch engraved gilt dial with Roman numerals and blued steel moon hands; the single train eight-day duration fusée movement, with maintaining power having a lever escapement with a mono-metallic balance, together with the original fitted leather case with a gilt stamp on the base reading Howell James & Co, Regent Street.
Case height 4 ¼ inches (10.5cms).
Howell James & Co exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. They sold many clocks made by Thos. Cole.
